GOSH we all have that AHA moment when we need to lose weight in a week! It may be for a major event or celebration or spur of the moment trip away somewhere delicious.

Then we often don’t have time to buy a new outfit so we need to fit or squeeze into something from our existing wardrobe and that’s where the trouble starts – mentally and physically.

Panicking we start searching for the latest fad diet and all the information on losing weight fast! Well the key is to forget about all that and get back to the basics of cooking some real wholesome good food that not only will taste great but nourish you from the inside out.

One of the big things I have learnt is starving yourself of food is not the answer. If you seriously want to lose weight in a week then the key is to start eating more and eating more of the right foods. Cooking from scratch and creating healthy meals that will fulfill you and keep you energized for the day without having to dive for that afternoon chocolate or sugar craving that then leaves you feeling guilty that you ate it and having to start all over again.

It’s time to break the PATTERN!

So how do I do that you ask?

Below are 5 KEY TIPS to help you when you wake up one morning and decide you need to lose weight in a week:

GROW YOUR OWN:

I know you can’t grow much to eat in a week but if you have a little time and green fingers there is nothing better than starting a small garden full of herbs and fresh vegetables that you can gather and cook up for your meals. As they say fresh is always best and are full of wonderful vitamins and minerals. Another great tip is that if you have an abundance of fresh produce then make the freezer your friend. Freeze extra fruit and vegetables to use up in broths, stews and other nutritious meals. They are great to throw into a slow cooker with your choice of herbs and spices. Growing your own vegetables and fruit give you the choice to eat the rainbow and embrace what the season’s harvest has to offer. Simple!

WATER THE BREATH OF LIFE:

This is one of the biggies. One thing I can’t emphasis enough is to drink enough water daily. To operate how your body should be operating and be the very best you can be the key is to stay hydrated. Water is the breath of life and something you definitely need to add if you want to lose weight in a week. At least 2.5 litres of fresh purified water a day is essential for your health, well-being and mental clarity.

FRESH HERBS & SPICES:

Time to clean out of your pantry and ditch anything that is processed and full of hidden salts or  sugars. Herbs and spices are your secret weapon in the kitchen for cooking. The foundation to any meal you create not only adding great taste but they are also packed full with all sorts of nutrients that will boost your immune system and get your body working how it should be. Remember you get what you pay for so make sure you buy the freshest herbs and spices you can.

PROTEIN:

Think of protein as the building blocks of our bodies something we need to add into our daily eating to help us repair and remain strong. What I have found is that a lot of women especially don’t eat enough protein thinking they will put on weight if they do. I can’t stress enough how important protein is in our meals and as a general rule, the recommended daily intake is around 0.8 – 1g of protein per kilogram of body weight, unless you are a endurance athlete then the recommendation goes up to 1.2 – 1.7g per kilogram of body weight.

PROPORTION YOUR FOOD:

This is huge as so many people pile way too much food on their plates and mostly it is a habit they have inherited from their families growing up. The main thing here is to think about the food you are putting on your plate and the balance of that food. Below is some simple guidelines to help you get into the mindset of how much you should be eating:

Protein – makes up 12% of your plate

Dairy – 8%

Unsaturated fats – 1%

Fruit & Vegetables – 50%

Starchy carbs – 28%
